FAIR TIME!!!

As summer starts to settle in and the temperature rises, it also signals the start of the summer festival season.  And the second week in July always means the start of the Heart of Illinois Fair.  For many years I volunteered in the Foods/Textiles building and even served a stint as the Superintendent of these wonderful competitions.  When my full-time job made it impossible for me to devote the time and energy needed, I, with much thought and consideration and a bit of sadness, stepped down.  The good side of this is that I can now enter in the competition, which I love.   And what is even better is that my granddaughter Lainey also competes.  I am glad to see that she is following in grandma’s footsteps!

SUMMER (FINALLY) AROUND THE FARM

As farmers, we tend to spend a lot of time listening to weather forecasts, watching the sky, and playing in the dirt!  Even though we have officially retired from the physical labor of farming, we will always remain farmers and have farming in our blood.

Our land and crops, flowers, grass, and bushes are still recovering from the harshness of this past winter.  My blackberries are very slow to recover and I fear the harvest will be very small.  Hopefully they will come back stronger next year.  The same is true of the ornamental grass.  I am not sure it is going to make it.  We have already dug up two clumps that were on either side of the garage door and replaced them with rose bushes.  We will see how the others progress after the 5 ½ inches of rain 10 days ago and temperatures this week in the 90’s.  (There’s that farmer in me!)Read More »

HAPPY EASTER!!!!

I hope all of you had a glorious Easter weekend.  After a long, bitterly cold, record-setting snowfall winter, the weather on Easter Sunday was perfect.  Sunny with temperatures in the low 80’s.

I wanted to share with you the view from my second floor office window.  Isn’t this spectacular!!!!  A week ago Monday, when the temperatures dipped to 30 degrees and we had snow (yes, just last week!!!)  I was so afraid that the blooms would not survive.  But they did and are now in full bloom!!

tree-thing

It is going to be an incredibly busy two weeks for SistersCg.  We will be hosting a bridal shower for our dear niece Britney (Carla’s daughter) this Sunday at Pat’s house.

And then on Saturday, May 3, SistersCg will be traveling to Clinton, IL to participate in the Six Chics Spring Market at the Dewitt County Fairgrounds.  We look forward to seeing many friends and fellow vendors at this exciting event.  And also we will hopefully find some interesting items to purchase!!!!

Thanks for stopping by.  Take care and enjoy the amazing spring weather.

Until next time,

Pat, Kathi, and Carla

THROWBACK THURSDAY

I have been noticing that a trend is surfacing on Facebook – Throwback Thursday.  Seeing the old pictures of my friends and family have brought a smile to my face and at times even a chuckle as they bring back some wonderful memories.   So I have been thinking about how I could use this in the blog.  And as I look around the house, I realized that it is filled with many vintage items (of course I am not referring to Murray and myself!).  So I have decided to feature one of my interesting treasures as part of Throwback Thursday.

SistersCg

For many years, whenever my sisters and I would get together we would spend a great deal of time making all sorts of plans – plans for trips we want to go on, plans for shops and tearooms we wanted to visit, plans for upcoming celebrations, plans for our futures, plans for our children’s futures, and plans for our dream job of owning our own business.  We would talk for hours and be all excited about our plans, but the time to leave would come and we would say our good-byes, share hugs and kisses and with lots of “I Love You’s” we would return to our homes, our jobs and the realities of life.  But we always had our plans and dreams in the back of our minds.Read More »

THE JOY (AND FRUSTRATION) OF MAKING PIE CRUST

Hello, everyone, and Happy New Year!  I am not one for making New Year’s resolutions but I always have a few things on my mind that I would like to accomplish or achieve.  And for a long while, pie crust has been on my mind.

I love to cook and bake and most of the time I am quite pleased with my creations, except for pie crust.  I have spent countless hours researching the art of making pie crust.  I have read and studied just about every recipe I could find online and in print.  I guess I was hoping that being well-informed about making pie crust would mean that all I needed to do is mix all the ingredients together and poof like magic, I would make the perfect pie crust.  Not so, my friends!Read More »
